US e-Chromic @usechromic - electrochromic thin film for retrofitting existing windows
US e-Chromic is developing an electrochromic thin film for retrofitting existing windows that reflects sunlight and IR, thus eliminating the "heating problem" (darkened surfaces that absorb sunlight and re-emit heat) that troubles most other dynamic window technologies. "The film can then be used to reflect the heat from sunlight back outside, reducing energy consumption and cooling costs."
"What is the key element of your technology that differentiates it from existing solutions US e-Chromic's patented electrochromic (EC) technology forms a reflective metal layer. When deactivated, ions return to a storage layer and the product become clear. Currently, smart window technology turns dark when activated. As sunlight is absorbed it is re-emitted as heat. This "heating problem" can reach 60C. To isolate this heat, dynamic window manufacturers imbed their technology into the interior of new IGUs, which are extremely expensive. Also, the services and dislocation costs associated with removal of existing IGUs (creating landfill), installation of new IGUs and tenant dislocation is cost prohibitive. Our reflectivity eliminates the heating problem. We can apply our reflective EC thin film onto existing windows at a fraction of the total cost of absorptive windows. We retrofit existing windows."
